Colour Symbolism: White

In this post, white.

I will list possible meanings for each colour, but it is up to the viewer to think about the work, what the artist is trying to tell you, and what it makes you feel.

White is the colour most Western brides wear, a trend which began with Queen Victoria, who chose white for her wedding gown. Since then, many have assumed a white dress symbolizes virginity or purity, though it has much more to do with status, suggesting that anyone whose white clothing remains clean is not having to engage in manual labour or dirty work.

In some cultures, white is the colour of funerals or mourning.

White: light, good, innocence, purity, clean, peace, new, balance, winter, snow, empty, mourning, sterile
